Asia-Pacific of Contemporary Art Triennial : Bulletin Vol.2 No.1 1994

THE FIRST ASIA-PACIFIC TRIENNIAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE The First Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, held at the The National Advisory Committee which facilitated the 1993 Queensland Art Gallery from 18 September to 5 December 1993, exhibition was Mr Doug Hall, Director and Dr Caroline Turner, has proved to be a groundbreaking event linking the contemporary Depu t y Director and Manage r of International Programs, art of Australasia, Asia and the Pacific. Queensland Art Gallery, Ms Alison Carroll, Visual Arts Manager, Attended by over 60,000 people, the first Triennial brought Asialink, Melbourne, Mr Neil Manton, Director, South East Asia and together nearly 200 recent works of art including painting, the Pacific, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Cultural sculpture, printmaking, photography, performance and installation Relations Branch, Canberra and Professor David Williams, art. Seventy-six artists were represented from Australia, China, Director, Canberra School of Art, Australian National University. Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand THE ARTISTS and Vietnam. For over two and a half years, members of the National Advisory Committee and curators travelled throughout the region meeting rtists and surveying current art trends. Their work was greatly -.41 cilitated in each country by local experts and art schools, iuseums and galleries (see acknowledgements). The selections for the exhibition were not made by Australian - curators going into the region and selecting only work that 5 rite them. It was central to the Triennial's philosophy - . - . iat the selections would also reflect what the experts in each oun t r y believed were impo r t an t issues within t he a r t of e a c h country, resulting in a project of genuine collaboration.
