APT Bulletin Vol.3 No.2
Ethnic Leaders Preview APT3 Over fifty representatives from Brisbane's ethnic communities were given a special preview of the Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art on Wednesday 8 September 1999. Multicultural Affairs Queensland (MAQ) Executive Director, Mr Uri Themal, said that, from all accounts, the cultural diversity and magnitude of the exhibition visibly moved community members. ''The preview provided an excellent opportunity for the community members to network as well as gain a deeper insight into the art of Asia and the Pacific," said MrThemal. MAQ has provided sponsorship to enable APT3 bulletins to be produced in nine languages. MrThemal said sponsorship was provided because of the exhibition's aim to encourage a greater understanding of cultural diversity. "Aims such as increasing cultural understanding, establishing the groundwork for further cultural exchanges, and the public's cultural awareness of communities from Asia and the Pacific, closely matched the Queensland Government's commitment to multiculturalism;' said MrThemal. "Utilising the arts is a way of helping people understand different cultures, and the Triennial is doing this in-a spectacular manner. ''The exhibition and associated events allow people to sample art from many different cultures, including the culture of Indigenous Australians." MAQ is the Queensland Government's lead agency responsible for promoting multiculturalism and positive community relations in Queensland, as well as coordinating government MulticulturalAffairs Queensland DepartmtntoftMPmnieran<IC.bin-et policy development and planning under the Multicultural Queensland Policy across all Government agencies. Cultural Tourism For APT3 Praise for the Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art continues from the country's leading media critics following their recent visits to Brisbane. Organised jointly by Tourism Queensland's Cultural Tourism unit and the Queensland Art Gallery, the arts journalists relayed the details of this exciting exhibition to their Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland audiences. The result of this publicity has played a crucial role in the promotion of Queensland as a leader in Cultural Tourism in Australia. It has also led the Queensland Travel Centre to develop short-break packages with Brisbane's leading hotels. In 1998, Tourism Queensland in partnership with Arts Queensland, appointed a Cultural Tourism Manager, a unique position heralding new cultural tourism initiatives.
