Although the Council is wholly financed by the U.K. tax-payer, it is an i i independent corporation under its Royal Charter and s strictly non-political. S I R E R I C M A C L A G A N K . C . V . O . C . B . E . . . Our aim is to interpret Britain in its broadly cultural aspects to all peopuo not normally living in these islands. Much o f the Council's work lies in the field o f adult education, in establishing British D I R E C T O R O F F I N E A R T S D E P A R T M E N T : libraries overseas, in giving the latest information about progress in scientific research, social M A J O R A . A . L O N G D E N , D . 5 0 . , O . B . E . development, education, letters and the like. But the Council seeks also to make known overseas our past and present achievements in music, drama and the fine arts. Thus it has sent collections o f paintings, sculpture, crafts, prints S E C R E T A R Y F 0 R E X H I B I T I O N : and drawings to many parts o f the world including Canada and the United States. M I S S L I H A R V E Y The more we in the United Kingdom know about Australians, how you live and what you do, the better for us; but that is a task for Australia. The British Council wants to tell you of our cultural life in the British Isles: one side o f an essential exchange. So we have recently established an office in Australia under Mr. CharlesWilmot and now have R E P R E S E N T A T I V E I N A U S T R A L I A : pleasure in offering to the people o f Australia this exhibition o f a selection o f the Wakefield C H A R L E S W I L M 0 T, E S Q. 0 .
