Jubilee exhibition of Australian art
Titis ExmmTloN is sponsored by the Australian Government as p a r t o f the Commonwealth Jubilee Celebrations for 1951. T h e a h n o f the selectors has been to Show a small b u t good collection o f abori- ginal paintings a n d sculptures a n d to gather together, when they were available, the best works b y the best artists who have worked i n this country from the time o f the first white settlements to the present day. The exhibition includes the finest examples from the National galleries, museums, libraries a n d other public institutions, a n d ma n y important works have been generously lent by clubs a n d private collectors. A t the same time the present collection has been designed to indicate the gradual development o f a r t in Australia, a n d it thus also is a n attempt to show the work o f artists who have added to o r developed or changed our tradition rather t h a n that o f those who have chiefly refined o n or maintained a n established style. With the space a t their disposal the selectors have h a d to leave ou t mu c h admirable work; b u t where the choice lay between historical significance a n d artistic merit they have tried to b e guided b y the latter. T h e omission o f sculpture from all b u t the aboriginal section o f the Catalogue is du e to the difficulty and danger o f carrying such works o f art, ma n y o f the best of which are i n plaster o r clay, over long distances by road. Sculptures will b e added to the exhibition from collections available i n each o f the centres to which the exhibition travels, a n d addenda will be ma d e to the Catalogue i n those places.
