AL I X Yves Bo r n o n the 29th August, 1890, a t Fontainebleau. At t e nd e d the J u l i a n and Ra n s o n Academies. His p a i n t i ng was originally influenced by Andre' Lhote's cubism a n d le Fauconnier's expressionism. After t he 1st Wo r l d Wa r , h e became a teacher a t the Ran s on Academy. H e helped i n t he decoration of the liners No rma n d i e a n d the l i e de France. Hi s work as a n engraver is well known. Secondary studies a t the Lycée Corneille a n d evening classes a t the School of Fine Arts i n Rou e n . I n 1937 he entered the School of Fine Arts i n Paris, a n d i n 1939 h e wo n the G r a n d Prix de Rome , which d i d not, however, alter his admiration for Cezanne a n d Gauguin. I n 1939, h e took p a r t i n t he 50th Anniversary Exh i b i t i on o f the Pont-Aven painters. U p till the Liberation h e revised his ideas o n space, perspective and colour. I n 1949, attention was d r awn t o h i m a t the exhibition i n the Billiet- Ca p u t o Gallery, History o f a Portrait, which later t ou r ed the Un i t e d States, where i n 1951, B i r t h o f an I do l , a film based o n it, was made. Hi s inextinguishable love o f n a t u r e goes back t o the days o f his childhood in the country. Secondary studies of the Lycée Michelet where h e became a friend o f Rene' Huyghe. Has admi t t ed t he following influences: Elie Fau r e a n d his pantheistic conception of art, Renoir, t he lands of t h e sun, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, the Canary Islands, Portugal. I n 1935, w i n n e r of the Pa u l Guillaume 1st Prize. Exhibits a t the Indépendants, the Tuileries, t he Salon d'Automne, a n d takes p a r t i n all the official F r ench exhibitions overseas. Son o f a vine- grower, lives i n Tou r a i ne , where h e cultivates fruit trees a n d painting, which he took u p a t the age of 49. First exhibition a t the Salon d ' Au t omn e i n 1921, was t h e n noticed by J e a nn e Bucher. I n 1927, Diaghilev commissioned h i m t o make the costumes a n d decor for Appo l l o Musagète of Stravinsky. I n 1919, retrospec- tive collection a t the Cha r pen t i e r Gallery. Bauchan t is the portrait painter of imaginary a n d real flowers, succulent fruit, a n d r u r a l scenes. Hi s ancestors were farmers a n d his father a school teacher. Secondary studies a t t he Lycée of Vesoul. On l y started t o p a i n t i n 1928 after hav i ng tried several professions. A n admi r e r of Picasso. a n d Matisse, h e worked wi t h Walch. B u t Gromaire's influence is the most marked. Bercot's work, where reality mingles wi t h the imaginary, is inspired b y his childhood i n the country. Bercot has ma d e two stained glass windows for the Chapel of Issy (Haute-Savoie). Ha s exhibited a t the Salon d'Automne, the T emp s Present, Tuileries, J e u n e Peinture, a n d a t the B r a u n a n d Louis Carré Galleries. Private exhibition a t the Cha r pen t i e r Gallery a n d since 1950 a t the Andre' We i l Gallery. Ha s been participating since 1937 i n the official exhibitions of French a r t overseas. Among his notable decorations let us mention the Sacred He a r t Chapel i n the Chu r ch of la Courneuve, the President o f the Republic's suite o n t h e liner l i e de France a n d collection of Aubusson tapestries synthetising the exotism o f the four corners of t he world at t he Maison d e la France d ' Ou t r e Me r (200 m2). Bezombes' p a i n t i ng expresses the joy o f living while a t t emp t i ng t o combine the mod e r n vision of the West wi t h t he eternal East. Portrait of Ma r i a Casares (Portrait de Maria Casares) 1951 1.16 x 0.89 BOMBOIS Camille Bo r n a t Vénarey-les-Laumes (Côte d'Or) i n 1883. Son of a boatman, h e spent t he first years of his life o n a barge. F r om t he age of 16 his ambition was t o be a painter, b u t h e became i n succession a wrestler, a labourer a n d a well-digger. I n 1907 h e came t o Paris t o work o n the construction of the und e r g r ound rail- way. H e t h e n worked a t n i g h t so as to p a i n t d u r i n g the day. Ab o u t 1925 h e was able t o devote himself entirely t o painting. H e sold his works a t the "Foire aux Croutes" where h e was discovered by F l o r en t Fels, a n d t h e n helped by Uhdé, Ma t h o a n d Bing. Hi s tireless labour, his love o f "la bel ouvrage," ma d e him appreciated i n Switzerland, Germany, America a n d France. T h o u g h h e thinks h e is simply copying the appearance of t h e material world, Bombois creates works of great lyricism.
