His first canvases, r e d a n d black, a t the J e a n n e Bucher Gallery, h a d a violence which ma d e t h em a k i n d of expressionism o f abstraction. Un d e r the influence of visiting painters his artistic talent was quickly aroused. H e devoted himself first t o sculpture, t h e n drew sketches for Qu i mp e r pottery. We n t to Paris a t the age o f 19 a n d spent his time between t h e capital a n d Brittany wi t h trips to Bu r gundy a n d later t o Provence. I n 1936 wo n t he P a u l Guillaume Prize. F r om 1940 t o 1944 lived a t Aix-en-Provence, at t h e Cha t e au Noir, Cezanne's former home. T h e n took p a r t i n all the important exhibitions g r oup i ng t he young i ndependen t painters of the Ecole d e Paris, and TANGUY Yves Bo r n o n the 5 t h J anua r y , 1900, i n Paris. Educ a t ed himself by his own means a n d began to p a i n t i n 1926. H e mi xed wi t h surrealists a n d exhibited w i t h the painters of this school, a n d also a t the Salon des Surindépendants. Ha s con- t r i bu t ed t o the publication "Revolution Surréaliste," etc., a n d to various others of the same nature, a n d has signed all t he surrealist manifestos since 1926. I t was i n o r de r t o r i d h i m of his h a b i t of drinking, wh i ch h e had contracted wh e n 10 years old, t h a t his mo t h e r gave h i m his taste for painting. Hi s ideas were t aken f r om post cards a n d h e p a i n t e d scenes of Paris a n d its outskirts, the Ile-de-France a n d later Lyon a n d t he Rh o n e region. Before the 1914 wa r his work showed the three periods, Montmagny, impressionist a n d white. Du r i n g the last twenty years the somewhat ha r s h precision of his canvases is reminiscent of Canaletto. Came t o Paris i n 1897 a n d led a Bohemi an life a t Montmartre. H e lived i n the famous wooden house a t No. 13 Ra v i gn a n Square, a n d mi x e d w i t h t he artists a n d writers of Picasso's circle. Hi s trips t o Morocco, Spain a n d Egypt increased his sources of inspiration. After t h e 1914-1918 wa r h e became t he portrait pa i n t e r o f the theatrical a n d fashionable worlds, from Deauville t o t he Riviera, while continuing t o p a i n t Versailles, t he Bois d e Boulogne a n d Paris.
