His real n ame is Gaston Du c h amp and h e belongs to a family of artists which includes t he sculptor Ra ymo n d Duchamp a n d the cubist a n d surrealist pa i n t e r Marcel Duchamp . Hi s first cubist pictures were pa i n t ed i n 1912. I n his studio a t Pu t e a ux t he " L a Section d ' Or " group was formed comprising Picabia, Metzinger, Gleizes, Leger, etc. His work then developed towards a greater abstraction, while h e devoted himself t o colour engraving by a process revived from one invented by Debucou r t i n the eighteenth century. I n this ma n n e r h e engraved the mod e r n paintings of the Bernheirn Gallery a n d worked for the chalcographic d e p a r tme n t of the Louvre. Jacques Villon, wh o has described himself as " a cubist impressionist," catches n a t u r e in t he snare of a network of black threads which serve t o spread diaphanous screens where volume is b o r n i n the breaking u p of the solar spectrum. I n 1950 h e won t he first prize for pa i n t i ng given by the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburg. Hi s ancestors were Du t c h seamen a n d his parents music teachers. Vlaminck was first of all a racing cyclist between Paris-Roubaix a n d Paris-Bordeaux. I n 1900 h e earned his living by playing the violin i n the cafes-chantant of Montmartre. Self taught, h e only decided t o earn his living f r om p a i n t i ng towards t he age of 35. Ab o u t 1900 Vlaminck a n d Derain, while working i n the same studio a t Chatou, influenced Matisse, a n d the "fauve" movemen t grew o u t of t he i r c ommon interests. U p t o 1919 Vlaminck painted principally the banks of t he Seine a n d the neighbouring heights, t h e n i n 1925 he retired t o his estate a t Rueil-la-Gadelière ne a r Verneuil-sur-Avre (Eure-et-Loire), where h e divides his time between farming a n d p a i n t i ng t he harsh a n d violent aspects of the countryside. I n 1933 held a large retrospective exhibition a t the Be r nhe im Gallery i n Paris a n d a t the Palais des Beaux-Arts i n Brussels. H e was educated i n Paris. H e exhibited i n 1928 a t the Au t umn Salon. F r om 1928 t o 1931 h e a t t ended the Andre' Lh o t e Academy. I n 1932 h e p a i n t e d his first abstract canvases and belonged t o t he Abstraction-Creation group, where h e me t Miro, Ar p , Delaunay, Calder, Mo n d r i a n a n d He r b i n . Between 1936 a n d 1943 Vulliamy's work is ma r k e d by surrealism. I n 1945 Vulliamy r e t u r n e d to mo r e abstract painting, a n d i n 1948 his exhibition a t J e a n n e Bucher's showed h i m t o b e definitely com- mi t t e d t o abstraction while searching for spatial movement. H e exhibited a t the Salon des Réalites Nouvelles, t h e n a t the Salon d e Mai. F r om 1949 t o 1952 his exhibitions a t the Kunsthalle i n Berne, a n d Basle, t he Salon de Mai, a n d the Galerie Roque , ma r k e d his efforts to integrate colour i n abstraction. 1 1 5 Landscape of Saint-Tropez (Paysage d e St-Tropez) 1951 O.89x 1.16 WAROQU I ER Henry de Bo r n i n Paris o n 8 t h J anua r y , 1881. I n his you t h h e was influenced by Far- Eastern a r t a n d impressionism. H e was a p u p i l a t the School of Decorative Arts a n d then passed t he examination for Professor of Decorative Composition of the Ecole Estienne. H e visited Brittany frequently between 1901 a n d 1914 and interpreted it i n t h e spirit of stylisation of Japanese artists. H e also visited the Valley of Chamon i x a n d Saint-Tropez. T h e period of white a n d ochre harmonies, influenced by the primitive landscape painters a n d I t a l i an frescoes, was followed by sombre landscapes inspired by the Lakes of Coromandel. Hi s large com- position, T h e Tragedy, i n t he theatre of the Palace o f Chaillot, marks the grow- ing place which t he h u m a n figure expressing suffering takes henceforth i n his work. A t 15 h e entered the National School of Fine Arts a t Hongchow where h e t augh t f r om 1941 t o 1947. H e came t o Paris in 1948. I n 1949 h e exhibited a t the Creuze Gallery, i n 1950 a t the L a Hune L i b r a r y a n d the Galerie Pierre. I n 1952 h e took p a r t i n t he exhibition of young painters of the Paris School, organised i n Eng l a nd b y the Paris Branch of the British Council. I n 1950 h e received a prize for p a i n t i ng a t the International Biennial a t Geneva.
