First studied Medicine a n d Philosophy before taking u p p a i n t i ng i n Paris. After the 1914-1918 war, travelled i n Africa, Eu r op e a n d t he Un i t e d States. Picasso, the cubist school, the desert o f the Sahara ma r k e d his first paintings. H e then depicted Arcachon a n d its ma r i t ime constructions, a n d ma d e large decorations, tapestry cartoons for Pierre David-Weil a n d Mrs. Cuttoli, settings for the Russian ballets, a n d murals for t he Villejuif college refectory. Lu r ç a t regenerated the craft of tapestry-making b y restoring t o fashion t h e Mi dd l e Ages technique of t he gros po i n t a n d of t h e use of a small n umb e r of colours. H e d r ew his decorative themes from cubism a n d f r om the symbolistic devices o f surrealism. By composing tapestry cartoons a n d by himself supervising their execution, as well as t h r ough his teaching a n d his principles o f craft organization, Lurçat greatly contributed t o t h e rise of t he Aubusson workshops.
