COX, DAVID, 1783-1859 English School. Born Deritend, n e a r Birmingham, t h e s on of a tinsmith. At t h e age o f fifteen was apprenticed a s a miniature pa i n t e r t o a working jeweller. L a t e r earned a living b y painting scenery ( a n d occasionally playing t h e p a r t o f Pantaloon) f o r a theatrical company, wi t h whom h e toured for f o u r years. Coming t o London in 1804, he me t J o h n Varley, who gave h im a f ew lessons in wa t e r colours. F r om t h e n on he devoted himself seriously t o his a r t . B y 1809 h a d successfully established himself a s a drawing teacher and h a d begun t o exhibit his pictures. I n 1813 wa s elected a membe r o f t h e Old Wa t e r Colour Society. Spen t some ye a r s on t h e Continent a n d painted much in Derbyshire a n d No r t h Wales. I n 1839 began painting in oils.
