Came t o South Australia with his parents, 1883. Studied a t Adelaide unde r H. P. Gill a n d J ame s Ashton. Ab r oad between 1899-1903, h e studied at Julian's Academy unde r J e a n Pa u l Laurens and Benjamin Constant, l a t e r under Bonnat, a n d in t h e a r t schools of Italy. Heysen f i r s t became known through his paintings a n d drawings o f g um trees. H e wa s one o f t h e f i r s t painters to ma k e a serious s t udy of t h e eucalypt a n d t o give i t pictorial significance. Received his education a t t h e Brisbane Gr amma r School, a n d a f t e rwa r d s entered t h e service o f t h e Bank of New South Wales, studying a r t in t h e evenings a t t h e Julian Ashton School, Sydney. H e made his f i r s t success wi t h a group of wa t e r colours a t t h e Society of Artists' Exhibition in 1907. Retiring f r om t h e b a n k in 1908 on account of ill-health, h e devoted t h e remaining years of his life entirely t o painting. Romantic a nd original in outlook, h i d e r ' s work is noted f o r its delicate colour a n d sympathetic handling o f t h e wa t e r colour medium.
