A distinguished member o f t h e essentially Eng- lish groups o f g r e a t po r t r a i t painters, which includes Gainsborough a n d Sir J o s h u a Reynolds. Early, showed remarkable ability i n drawing a n d a t ten ye a r s old wa s doing po r t r a i t s in crayons a t Oxford, a f t e rwa r d s a t Bath. In 1785 began t o pa i n t in oils. We n t t o London, 1787. I n 1791, a t t h e insistence of t h e King, a n d being unde r t h e required age (24), h e wa s elected a n extra Associate o f t h e Academy. On t h e de a t h of Reynolds t h e following y e a r was made Painter-in-ordinary t o t h e King. R.A. 1794. Th e r e a f t e r h e h a d a con- s t a n t succession o f distinguished sitters. Made two visits t o Paris, in 1814 and 1825. Knighted 1815. Wo r ked a t Aix-la-Chapelle, in Rome, a n d o t h e r p a r t s of t h e Continent, 1818-1819. Elected President of t h e Royal Academy, 1820. During his lifetime h e amassed a matchless collection of drawings b y t h e Old Masters, o f which those b y Raphael a n d Michelangelo a r e now in t h e University Galleries o f Oxford. Adviser t o J . Angerstein, whose collection a f t e r his death formed t h e nucleus of t h e London National Gallery Collection. Buried i n St.. Paul's. 100. In 1902 travelled on t h e Continent, spending his time particularly in Spain. From 1903-1926 wa s on t h e s t a f f o f t h e "Evening News," Sydney. Re-visited London a n d wa s ab r oad until 1935. During t h a t time he travelled a n d worked i n Spain, France, Italy, No r t h Africa, a n d India, a nd held f r equen t exhibitions in Londin.
