Wi t h Tom Roberts s t a r t e d the Camp a t Box Hill—the f i r s t of t h e artists' camps r ound Melbourne—and took p a r t wi t h Roberts, Streeton, a n d Conder in t h e f i r s t Impressionists' Exhibition a t Buxton's Galleries, 1889. McCubbin was one o f t h e f i r s t o f ou r painters to discover t h e lyrical qualities o f t h e Australian bush. Influenced a t f i r s t by Bastien Lepage, b u t l a t e r became a devotee o f Turner, whose works h e studied during a visit t o Eu r op e i n 1907. Proceeded t o Paris, wh e r e h e studied old ma s t e r s in t h e Louvre. Re t u r n i ng to Melbourne in 1913, established t h e Meldrum A r t School, which h a s exerted a widespread influence on Australian art. Lectured i n t h e United S t a t e s of America, 1927, a n d r e t u r n e d t o Australia v i a Europe, 1931. I n 1937 was appointed a Trustee o f . t h e National Gallery o f Victoria.
