WYLD, WILLIAM, 1806-1877 British School. Born London. Although he painted i n oils, he is best known as a wa t e r colour painter. A friend of Bonington, a n d wi t h him wa s responsible f o r t h e appreciation o f wa t e r colour painting i n France. Represented in many British galleries and in t h e Luxemburg. 192. Born Yorkshire. Whilst a t Cambridge practised sketching. Appointed Master o f Mathematics a t Katoomba College in t h e Blue Mountains, h e arrived in Sydney early in 1885 t o t a k e u p duties, a n d continued his tentative efforts i n a r t . Visited England, 1893, a n d on his r e t u r n two years l a t e r intro- duced decorative poster designing. F i r s t me t wi t h recognition a s a water colour painter a t a n exhibition o f impressions o f Mt. Buffalo, which h e held in Melbourne in 1911. Departed f o r England, 1912, a n d during t h e Gr e a t War was a n instructor in mu s k e t r y a n d machine gunnery. Au t h o r o f a n authorita- tive wo r k on Goya's political cartoons. ROUAULT, GEORGES, 1871 Bo r n in Paris. F i r s t apprenticed t o a n a r t i s t in stained glass. En t e r e d the school o f Fine A r t s when 18 a n d f o r five ye a r s wa s Gustave Moreau's student, b u t failed in competition f o r t h e Rome Prize. I n 1898 Rouau l t wa s appointed c u r a t o r o f t h e Gustave Moreau Museum on t h e d e a t h o f t h e founder. Forsaking academic subjects h e began painting nocturnal landscapes, a nd in 1905, scenes inspired b y t h e world o f t h e circus, travelling t h e a t r e a n d low life. I n 1910 he held his f i r s t exhibition a t Druet. I n 1916 t h e well-known merchant, Ambroise - Vollard, took h im i n his charge. Rouault created a personal technique o f oil painting; he would wo r k t h r o u g h successive layers o f p a i n t until h e achieved a v e r y s t r o n g relief, outlining objects a n d faces wi t h h e a vy black strokes which enhance t h e colours, a s t h e lead f r ame s do f o r stained glass.
