F o r t h e selection of t h e p r e s en t collection, wi t h all its omissions a n d in- clusions which should o r should n o t have been made, I a m entirely responsible. Th e selection h a s been governed b y ma n y factors, t h e limited time in which t o see all t h e paintings offered, t h e difficulty o f selecting on t h e s p o t before hav i ng seen all t h e o t h e r paintings, and so on. A s a general rule, I have tried t o show a representative group o f paintings b y a limited numb e r o f artists, r a t h e r t h a n isolated examples b y ma n y artists, a n d purposely excluded t h e wo r k o f ma n y well-known painters because o f the reason o f their being so well known, this applying especially t o t h e wo r k o f local painters. On t h e whole, t h e paintings shown in t h i s exhibition a r e wo r k s which I f e l t be s t represented t h e artists. This introduction is n o t a n apology, f o r t h e exhibition needs no apology, b u t r a t h e r t h e admission t h a t one ma y find ma n y t h i ng s t o object t o i n any selection, a s no two people would select all t h e s ame paintings. My only apology is t o t h e people whose collections I have n o t been able t o explore o r t h a t I did n o t know of.
