T H E AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S WEEKLY PORTRAIT PRIZE FOR 1955 CONDITIONS 1. Portraits submitted for The Australian Women's Weekly Portrait Prize shall be of a woman, or of a woman with a baby or young child u p to 10 years, or of a child under 14 years. The portrait shall form the major part of the composition. 2. Painting, which must b e in oils, water colors, or pastels, must be the original work of the competitor and must have been painted during the 12 months pre- ceding the date fixed for the sending in of entries. Each entry must be accom- panied by a statutory declaration by the competitor to the effect that the work is in accordance with the conditions and that the artist accepts the conditions of entry in every respect. 3. The portraits must be painted from life and must be no smaller than 12 x 16 inches. A painting of the nude figure will not be accepted as a portrait. 4. Entries must be suitably framed and delivered at the expense of the com- petitor to the Director at the National Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, between Monday, July 25, and Saturday, July 30, 1955, inclusive. No entries will be accepted after 12 noon on Saturday, July 30, 1955. 5. Entries shall be available for hanging in the National Art Gallery of New South Wales and then to be sent to each capital city of Australia for exhibition for a period of up to 10 months from the closing date of the competition. awarded to the best entry by a woman. Prize-winning pictures and the full copy- right on them shall become the property of Consolidated Press Limited. 8. T h e S p o n s o r s (Consolidated Press Limited) and the Trustees of the National Art Gallery will exercise reason- able care of portraits submitted but will not be responsible for the loss of or for any damage whatsoever to any entry while in their custody. 9. No competitor shall enter more than two paintings. Each entry must have the name and address of the competitor and the title of the portrait clearly printed on the back of the work. Entry form and statutory declaration must also be enclosed in an envelope and attached securely to the back of each work. The statutory declaration is printed on the back of the entry form. 10. Competitors must collect and remove their work as and when notified by the Director either privately or by advertise- ment. 11. Entries will be judged by the six directors of the six National Art Galleries of the six States of the Commonwealth. The decision of the judges shall be final and binding in all matters relating to the awarding of prizes and the subsequent selection of works for exhibition. 6.
