H e is one of the painters particularly representative of the "Novecento" trend, but his personality broke away from formulas and his painting has increasingly tended towards the solution of colour problems 6 9 J UDGMENT (1954) 7 0 SPAT IAL SEASCAPE RENATO GUTTUSO Born at Palermo (Sicily) 1912; lives in Rome, where he teaches. After the experience of impressionism and post-impressionism, Guttuso was established as an exponent and master of the group of neo-realists, with narrative and social aims. H e has to his credit participation in many Italian and foreign exhibitions and has been awarded many prizes. His paintings are to be found in the most important collections and art museums 7 1 T H E SULPHUR M I NE (1955) Collection Sargentini, Rome 7 2 ST I LL L I F E (1956) Collection Sargentini, Rome MARIO MAFAI Born in Rome 1902; lives in the same city, where he teaches at the Academy of Beaux Arts. One of the founders of the "Scuola Romana," which opposed an Italian expressionism to the "Novecento" classicism. His "tonalistic" painting greatly influenced contemporary Italian art. H e took part in many Italian and foreign exhibitions, winning numerous prizes 7 3 FLOWERS (1953) Collection Luigi De Luca, Rome 7 4 LANDSCAPE Collection Mu s eum o f Modern Art, Rome [ 2 0 1 ALBERTO MAGNELLI Born in Florence 1888; lives in Paris. After a significant experience in the field of figurative art, he was drawn to the abstract forms and today is one of its chief exponents. His painting is characterised by its stylistic clarity as well as its poetic intensity. His work can b e found in the principal European and American museums. In Europe, and particularly in Paris, as well as in North and South America, his painting is held in great esteem by art experts, and much sought after by collectors. He won 1st prize at the last Sao Paulo Biennial 7 5 DI FFUSED LIGHT 7 6 COLOURED PATH (1950) 7 7 HARMONY FRANCESCO MENZIO Born at Tempio Pausania (Sardinia) 1899; lives in Turin. H e has taken part in practically all the Italian exhibitions and many foreign shows as well. He won the second "Bergamo" prize, the second "Rome" prize, and others. He belonged to the group of "The Six Painters of Turin." His painting is decidedly of "post-impressionist" character 7 8 BR I DGE ON T H E P 0 RIVER Collection Dr. Luigi A lioni, Turin 7 9 BREAKFAST Collection Dr. Luigi A iloni, Turin ENNIO MORLOTTI Born at Lecco (Lombardy) 1910; lives in Milan. He took part in the "Corrente" group opposed to the "Novecento" "classicist" group; sub sequently, he took part in the new movement, "New Ar t Front," and other Milanese artistic groups. His painting has been given particular recognition in Italy and abroad 80 IDOL (1952) 8 1 IMAGE (1952) ANTONIO MUSIC Born at Gorizia 1909; lives in Paris, where he is numbered amongst the Italian painters held most highly in esteem. He has shown his work in several Italian and foreign exhibitions and has been awarded prizes amongst which was the "Paris" first prize at Cortina d'Ampezzo, 1951. His painting is characterised by a strict concentration on essentials which tends to the abstraction of form 8 2 SOUTHERN PEASANT GIRLS 83 LANDSCAPE GIOVANNI OMICCIOLI Born in Rome 1901; lives in the same city. Participated in many exhibitions, both collective and one-man, in Italy and abroad, won various prizes, amongst which were the "Colomba" prize in Venice, 1946, the "Michetti Prize," 1952, and the "Marzotto-Valdagno Prize," 1943. He established his reputation as one of the most sensitive colourists of the neo-realist painting [21]
