One of the most representative artists of modern Italian painting, where after numerous experiences - he established his personal style. H e is making his mark as an abstract painter. He has taken part in the Venice Biennials, the Rome Quadriennials and the Milan Triennials, besides collective exhi- bitions abroad and one-man exhibitions in Rome. Has been awarded various prizes 8 9 BBABA POUR CHEF 9 0 NEW IDOLS ARISE FAUSTO PIRANDELLO Born at Rome 1899; lives in the same city. H e is considered one of the foremost Italian painters. His experience has been gained through the various art experiments of the last thirty years. Pirandello has increasingly established his name through a typical and personal expression which tends towards the chromatic and abstract values. He has taken part in many exhibitions and won many prizes 9 1 ROOFS National Gallery o f Modern Art, Rome ENRICO PRAMPOLINI ( F o r biographical note see page 13) 9 2 ABSTRACT TENS IONS (1950) MARIO RADICE Born at Como 1900; lives in Milan, where he established his reputation as a painter and as an art critic. One of the chief Italian exponents of abstract painting, after giving an active contribution for a brief time to the Milan "Rationalists" group. He took part in the Venice Biennali and the Rome Quadriennali, besides other exhibitions, and won various recognitions for his work 9 3 COMPOS I T ION R.S. (1940) 9 4 COMPOS I T ION R.S. (1941) MAURO REGGIANI Born at Nonàntola (Modena ) 1897; lives in Milan, where he also teaches. One of the most outstanding personalities of the Italian abstract 95 96 trend, of which, in 1934, together with a group of artists, he issued the first "Manifesto.' His painting is inspired by a strong feeling for com- position and a marked sense of balance. He has taken part in many Italian and foreign exhibitions and been awarded several prizes. His work can be found in national and foreign galleries as well as in private collections COMPOS I T ION N b (1951) COMPOS I T ION N.2 (1952) SERGIO ROMITI Born at Bologna 1928; lives in the same city. He has given one-man shows of his work as well as participating in collective exhibitions, both in Italy and abroad, where he has won much recognition. His painting is directed towards a formal abstractionism, imbued with a subtle sense of poetry 9 7 ST I LL L I F E (1951) 9 8 STILL LIFE (1953) BRUNO SAETTI Born in Bologna 1902; lives in Venice, where he is the Director of the Academy of Beaux Arts, and teaches at the same Institute. Through the various pictorial experiences which have characterised ou r contem- porary painting, Saetti reached a style of his own, where composition and colour gained a high degree of poetical and figurative value. Many are the exhibitions in which he has taken part, both in Italy and abroad, and the prizes awarded him, amongst which are the First Prize at the Venice Biennial, 1952, and at the Rome Quadriennial, 1951. His work is at present in the most important museums and galleries 99 G I R L WI TH A GU I TAR (1953) 1 0 0 LANDSCAPE WI TH SUN (1955) GIUSEPPE SANTOMASO Born in Venice 1907; lives in the same city. This artist was formed through a very complex pictorial experience ( a prolonged stay abroad). He took part in many Italian and foreign exhibitions and won recognition and prizes, amongst which were the First Prize at the Venice Biennial, 1954, and at the third Biennial of Sao Paulo in Brazil. H e was among those who promoted the "New F r on t of the Arts"; he then attained marked stylistic independence and turned towards the poetry of abstractionism 1 0 1 THE PILEDRIVER (1953) 1 0 2 HARPOON O F T H E AD I GE R I V E R (1953) ANTONIO SCORDIA Born in the Argentine at Santa Fe in 1918 of Italian parentage; lives in Rome.
