He started his artistic career in Paris; in Italy he took part in the most important exhibitions, winning the first prize at the Rome Quadriennial and the Venice Biennial. Other prizes were given to him at other exhibitions, both in Italy and abroad. Painter and author. One of the chief exponents of Italian culture and in particular of Italian literature. With Giovanni Papini and Prezzolini, in the years before the first world war, he con- tributed to the renewal of art, letters and taste in Italy, working side by side with the Futurist movement. When already teaching in Milan, he started painting under the influence of Cezanne. Later, he turned towards the metaphysical tendencies, to finally reach the abstract formula to which h e gave a wholly personal note. H e was one of the founders of the "Concrete Ar t Movement." H e took part in various exhibitions 111 METAPHYSICAL COMPOSITION Collection Galeazzi, Milan ORFEO TAMBURI Born at Jesi (Marche) 1910; studied and lived in Rome u p to 1951; is now a resident of Paris. H e is a painter, black-and-white artist and etcher. H e has taken part in numerous Italian and foreign exhibitions and has to his credit various one-man shows as well as scenography and costumes for the ballet. Important prizes have been awarded in recog- nition of his merits, which are those of an artist who keeps faith with "post-impressionist" art; his work is rich in tone and light values 1 1 2 BRASSERIE (1954) 1 1 3 THE BASILICA OF MASSENZIO (1950) GIANNI VAGNETTI Born in Florence 1898; lives in the same city, where he teaches at the Beaux Arts Academy. One of the chief representatives of Tuscan figurative art, his style was formed by French taste as characterised by Derain and Bonnard, but his personal qualities of composition make of Vagnetti an artist of particular prestige and individuality. H e has taken part in a great number of exhibitions and has won many prizes, among which was the Gold Medal at the Universal Exposition of Paris in 1937 114 PORTRAIT National Gallery o f Modern Art, Rome 115 FIGURE National Gallery o f Modern Art, Rome EMILIO VEDOVA Born in Venice 1919; lives in the same city. He belonged to the "Corrente" group and to the "New F r on t of the Arts." H e has parti- cipated in the Venice Biennial, the Rome Quadriennial and various other Italian and foreign exhibitions. H e was awarded several prizes, including one at the Venice Biennial, 1950, and the Biennial in Brazil.
