Painter, black-and-white artist, etcher, writer, brilliant critic, he occupies a high ranking position in contemporary Italian cultural life. His art shows a clear relationship to "post-impressionism" and expressionism. He started his career as a futurist, actively participating in the artistic events of this movement. He is among the founders of the Milan "Concrete Ar t " group. He has dedicated himself in particular to the graphic and plastic arts ("plastic complexes") 1 3 0 NEGAT I VE - POS I T IVE (1954) 131 NEGAT I VE — POS ITIVE (1954) ANNA SALVATORE Born in Rome; lives in the same city. Painter, black-and-white artist, etcher, of neo-realist tendencies, she made her name in numerous exhibitions, amongst which were the Venice Biennials and the Rome Quadriennials. In 1952 she was awarded a Venice Biennial prize for her drawing 132 YOUNG ROMAN G I R L (1955) 133 YOUNG G I RL WI TH A STR I PED SWEATER (1955) SCIPIONE (Gino Bonichi) Born at Macerata 1904; died in Arco 1935. He started his career in Rome, showing his work for the first time a t a public exhibition in 1927. He was amongst the advocates of reaction against the "Novecento" classicism. Poet and writer, he placed his rich phantasy of expressionist leanings at the service of pictorial expression. He influenced his con- temporaries to such an extent that the "Roma n School" is in great part due to him 134 T H E SANT ' ANGELO BR I DGE (1932) 135 NUDE (1927) ERNESTO TRECCANI Born in Milan 1920; lives in the same city. He took part in several exhibitions, amongst which were the Venice Biennials, the Roman Quadriennials and many one-man exhibitions in Italy and abroad, establishing his name as a neo-realist painter and winning various prizes 136 MI LAN; S TREET I N T H E C ENT R E O F TOWN (1955) 1 3 7 PEASANTS O F MELISSO (1955) GIUSEPPE VIVIANI Born at Agnano (Pisa) 1898; lives in Palermo, where he teaches at the Academy of Beaux Arts. He took part in various national and inter- national exhibitions, obtaining important recognition, in particular as an etcher, among which were the first prize at the Venice Biennial., 1950, and the first Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil 138 DOGS AND CABINS (1952) 139 PRISON FLOWERS (1955) SCULPTORS PER ICLE FAZZIN1 Born at Grottamare (Marche) 1913; lives in Rome, where he teaches at the Acadamy of Beaux Arts. He has taken part in many Italian and foreign exhibitions, winning important recognitions, amongst which were the first prize for sculpture at the Roma n Quadriennial. 1951, the first prize at the 1952 Venice Biennial and the "President of the Republic Prize," 1953. His work can be seen in national and foreign museums.
