PREFACE With these 157 pictures and sculptures by Contemporary Italian Artists go our warm greetings to the Australian people. We know that in your young and vigorous country there has been since the pioneer days a reverence for the Arts. Already in a little over 100 years you have produced certain trends of painting which can be rightly claimed as an Australian School By accepting the invitation of your State Galleries and the sponsorship of your leading newspaper organisations, we fully realize that this exhibition will bring our two countries closer, as they both share in their communities a common recognition of the values of the spirit Italy has been one of the major centres of European culture for centuries. Many people have seen her fabulous collections of works of art, her famous buildings and have visited the ancient cities of her fair country. However, some may have wondered over the permanence of our cultural and creative vitality during the times of struggle. I n spite of the stress of war and political upheaval, the processes of creative work have never been suppressed or curtailed, particularly the supreme quality of freedom of expression which is the life and soul of man and cannot be destroyed Three thousand years of uninterrupted evolution and revolu- tion, which made history for our civilized world, represent an unbroken continuity in Italian creative tradition. This is not only amazing as a phenomenon, bu t remarkable because of its uniqueness I feel that these pictures and sculptures carry a message to all of you from the Italian people who know that the many New Australians of Italian extraction who are actively helping to develop your magnificent country, have in themselves the same creative spirit which has given to the world Giotto, Michelangelo, Raffael and many others, down to the contemporary artists who have sent these works to Australia Their message goes to roots have grown on the sturdy destiny today to prove that as victorious in the Southern Seas the great Australian nation. Noi sappiamo che nel vostro giovane e vigoroso paese v'è una riverenza per le arti che risale ai tempi dei pionieri. Già, in poco piii di 100 anni avete prodotto certe correnti pittoriche che possono a buon diritto essere giudicate appartementi ad una scuola australiana Accettando l'invito delle vostre Gallerie Statali e l'appoggio delle vostre principali organizzazioni giornalistiche, ci rendiamo pienamente conto che questa Esposizione ravvicinerà i nostri due Paesi i cui popoli condividono ii riconoscimento dei valori dello spirito L'Italia è stata per secoli uno dei maggiori centri della cultura europea. Molti hanno visto le sue favolose collezioni di opere d'arte, i suoi famosi edifici ed hanno visitato le antiche città della sua bella terra. Tuttavia alcuni possono aver dubitato della permanenza della nostra vitalità culturale e creativa durante i tempi della lotta. Nono- stante ii disagio della guerra e dei movimenti politici, i processi del lavoro creativo non son mai stati soppressi o limitati, in particolare quella suprema qualità che è la libertà d'espressione, vita e anima dell'uomo che non puô essere distrutta I tre mila anni di ininterrotta evoluzione e rivoluzione che hanno fatto la storia del nostro mondo civile, rappresentano un a con- tinuità costante nella tradizione creativa italiana. Ciô non è soltanto sorprendente come fenomeno ma notevole in ragione della sua unicità Jo penso che questi quadri e queste sculture portano ur messaggio a voi tutti dal popolo italiano, che sa che i molti nuovi aus- traliani di origine italiana che attivamente collaborano allo sviluppo del vostro magnifico Paese, hanno in sè quello stesso spirito creativo che h a dato al mondo Giotto, Michelangelo, Raffaello e molti altri, fino a quegli artisti contemporanei che hanno mandato queste loro opere in Australia Ii loro messaggio va alla grande Nazione australiana. Le vostre radici sono cresciute nel suolo vigoroso del rataggio britannico.
