TAPE 2 - SIDE A - BUL LEE FROM SOUTH KOREA We move now to our next speaker Bui Lee from South Korea. Bui Lee was bom in Long Shu and she graduated from Hong Yee University in 1987, after majoring in sculpture and in that same year participated in the 18th Hong Yee’s sculptures society exhibition entitled "Alcoholic’s Emotion" at Fine Arts Centre, Seoul. Since 1987, she has exhibited frequently showing both sculpture and performance works including in 1988 the 19th Hong ???? Sculptures Society Exhibition at Fine Arts Centre, Seoul and also Conference Poem Arts at ??? ???????? Theatre in Seoul. More recently the artist has concentrated on installation and performance work. Bui Lee’s work almost omnidirectional ranging from sculpture works to installations, works on paper, foods, costume design, network arts and performance. However, she is best known as the performance artist and has been acclaimed for her work in recent Korea/Japan performance festivals. Now Bui Lee is going to give a talk in her own native language and Ming Jung Lah is going to translate for her. BUL LEE It was a long introduction about myself and well for myself it was boring because it was such a long introduction. You have already heard about my exhibitions and things like that already through the introduction, however, I haven’t prepared about Korean women artists to have a talk here yet, so I talk about art and women that I think is art and women. As Imelda from Philippines just talked about, Korea as well is in kind of similar situation in some sense it is more complex, however, I think it is kind of similar in feminism and women arts. In Korea it’s been only few years that people start to talk about feminism in arts or in written forms and only recently women themselves started to struggle to find their identity and have their own voices through works and we are still trying to find our identity in struggle. At the moment in Korean art society, people call some artists as feminists when the artists use CASUALAARTGALL.TP2 24 M«y 1994
