Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, 1993 : Exhibition report

Professional Development The Senior Education Officer attended the biennial conference of the Asia-Pacific Confederation of Arts Educators at Silpakorn University, Bangkok from 6 to 10 July 1993 and presented a paper. Working in a liaison capacity with the production team from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation who were recording Out of the shadows, the documentary recording the Triennial, the Senior Education Officer visited Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand and was provided with extensive professional development opportunities. Contacts with artists in Thailand and Malaysia in home and studio situations provided invaluable insights subsequently incorporated in training programs for Gallery staff and Volunteer Guides. Education Officer, David Burnett, was afforded similar opportunities for professional development by working with the ABC production team in Shanghai, China and The Philippines. Discussions with artists and arts educators from several countries exhibiting in the Triennial provided professional enrichment and important awareness of current practice and philosophical background for all Gallery staff and particularly in the Education section. This wiil be incorporated into future Gallery education programs. Regional Development Through contacts developed by the APT the Oueensland Art Gallery hopes to develop specific exhibitions from Asia Pacific countries as travelling exhibitions for regional Oueensland. The first such exhibition is currently in the planning stages. The Gallery was able to place some visiting artists from the APT in regional Oueensland and expects to extend this contact over the next five years. Multilingual aspects Bulletin in six languages Multilingual poster for local communities of NESB Community day for local communities with appropriate non ' English language information Translation into English of Conference papers and artist talks during the first weekend Assistance to artists and Conference participants who did not speak English by providing volunteer and paid translators to assist them Material provided in original language for book and catalogue available in Gallery Library for research and consultation [A plan to have multilingual labels for the exhibition was deferred due to the lack of time but will be included in the next Triennial]
