The Second Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, Australia, 1996 : Report

Professional development The extensive collaborative p rocess of the Second Triennial has offered unique opportun ities for p rofessional development to a sign ificant number of established and younger curators from the Gallery as well as from major Australian and international art institutions. The Gallery enabled these selected curators to travel as part of the cu ratorial teams in Asian and Pacific countries where they visited artists, galleries and art institutions, and worked closely with their i nternational counterparts . Nine students from three Australian tertiary institutions worked i n the Gallery duri ng the Second Triennial with the Project Team and Exhibitions and as part of internship and training programs. Future developments The Asia-Pacific Triennial is a long-term commitment by the Queensland Art Gallery to stage three major exhibitions in Australia this decade (and with the success of the Triennial now planned to extend into the next century) exploring the contemporary art of the Asia-Pacific region . The Third Triennial is planned for 1 999 and is already generating considerable i nterest. The Gallery is also planning an exhibition entitled Asian Modernism-Australian Modernism for the year 2000 which exemplifies the Gallery's extensive i nvolvement with the art of the region . Parallelling and building on the success of the Triennial project, the Gallery's program of Travelling Exhibitions includes exhibitions which bring the Gallery's expanding Collection of contemporary Asian art to the people of Queensland. Additionally, the Gallery is collaborating with the Australian National Un iversity on a major Cross Cultural Research project and with Griffith University on specific research projects related to the Asia-Pacific Triennial. 7
