The Second Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, Australia, 1996 : Report

EDUCATION Resource Kit The Resource Kit was developed by the Education staff in consultation with the Asia-Pacific Triennial Project staff, the Queensland Department of Education and academic staff from the University of Queensland. The Resource Kit was funded primarily through the Australia Foundation for Culture and the Humanities. 2,500 Resource Kits were produced in total. 2, 150 Kits were distributed free of charge through the Queensland Department of Education to all schools in metropolitan and regional Queensland, and nationally through the Education Departments of all states and territories. The Resource Kits contained pre and post visit activities which extended the use of the Kit well beyond the students' direct interaction in the Gallery. In particular, the information texts, artists' statements, and student activities assisted the interpretation and understanding of complex ideas generated by the viewing of works in the exhibition. The Art Co-ordinator, Somerville House commented on the on-going value of the Resource Kit: These images were and will continue to be a rich source of reference and discussion, not only on the art of contemporary Asia/Pacific region, but on art in a broad sense. I have found the size, variety and quality of the reproductions especially appropriate as they are large enough to use in the classroom. The comments and artist extracts on the back are suitably brief and illuminating on the nature of the artwork. The Art Co-ordinator, Stuartholme School explained how the Kits were implemented in the classroom: Students from years 10 and 11 worked with the material to respond in both extended written form and short oral responses to issues raised by the exhibition. The addition of cards was another indispensable part of the pack and these were used with the direct projector to form the Visual focus of class discussion. . .. Thanks again for such a comprehensive Resource Kit to help make sense of the complex visual concepts exhibited. The Resource Kit comprised: • Folder: A4 • Seventeen large format full colour postcards: featuring a selected work on one side, plus artists' statements and information texts concerning the work printed on the reverse. • Book 1: 'Notes for Teachers: Cultural Frameworks': a 18 page A4 pamphlet containing contextual information on all geographical regions associated with the artists participating in the Second Asia-Pacific Triennial. 1 1
