Artists in Schools Residencies Program The highly successful Artists in Schools Residencies Program involved six Second Triennial artists - Michael Mel, Anna Mel and Tom Deko from Papua New Guinea; Suzann Victor from Singapore; Kamin Lertchaiprasert from Thailand; and Francesca Enriquez from The Philippines. All schools involved were secondary schools except for Somerville House which is a combined primary and secondary school. The Program provided rare opportunities for concentrated and direct interactions between Australian students and artists from the Asia-Pacific. These interactions occurred through various avenues such as group discussions, slide lectures, informal talks, performances, artist-in-residencies and artist led Gallery visits. The Artists in Schools Residencies Program was supported by the Australia Foundation for Culture and the Humanities. Interpretation Education contributed to the concept and editing of lnfopanels (room brochures), developed by the Asia-Pacific Triennial Project Team. The lnfopanels included information on the artists and artworks in the Second Triennial. They increased visitor mobility around the Gallery and were devised in respect to the layout of the exhibition. Additionally, Education Officers produced three Activity Trails for children. Teachers' Night A Teachers' Night was held on the afternoon of Wednesday 11 October. Over 100 teachers pre-booked with many turned away due to the limit on numbers. They each received complimentary materials including posters, Resource Kit and promotional brochure. Volunteer Guides conducted tours of different sections of the Gallery, following which an introductory welcome was held in the Gallery's sculpture courtyard. A majority of the attending teachers returned to the exhibition with their students. Volunteer Guide Training A substantial training program for the Volunteer Guides was coordinated by the Education section and included lectures, floortalks and demonstrations. The Guides also attended the extensive program of Artists' Talks, lectures and performances. The Volunteer Guides' training program commenced in July 1996 and had as follows: 1 2
