The Second Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, Australia, 1996 : Report

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Professional development has always been a significant aspect of the Triennial project. For the Second Triennial, Professional development was initiated through a number of avenues. Curatorial Teams The Curatorial Teams involved ten Gallery staff and thirty-two non-Gallery curators. The Triennial is considered by the Gallery to be an international project and accordingly, the Gallery is committed to this process of engaging a number of professionals from outside the Gallery. This process offers these Curatorial Team Members opportunities to contribute to and share in the many dimensions of the constantly evolving and professionally expanding curatorial process associated with the Triennial. lntemships Nine intemships were undertaken with undergraduates from the following institutions: University of Queensland; Queensland College of Art, Griffith University and the University of New South Wales. These students (two of whom travelled specifically from interstate at their own cost) assisted the Project Team and Exhibitions staff, and provided valuable assistance to the project on a number of levels. Asialink ASEAN Curatorial Training Workshops Asialink and Museums Australia sought and received support from the Gallery to engage two Gallery staff, the Exhibitions Officer and the Associate Registrar to participate as leaders in the ASEAN Curatorial training Workshop held in Kuala Lumpur in April, 1995. The success of this co-operative relationship has been extended with Senior Project Officer, APT being invited to assist the planning and realisation of the second stage of the program, the ASEAN Art Museum Professional Study Tour to Australia, in August, 1997. Australia-Japan Foundation Cultural Delegation to Japan The Curator of Contemporary Australian Art was invited to join a delegation of Australian Curators who travelled to Japan in 1996 as part of an intensive program of Japan/Australian cultural exchange in the area of Contemporary Art. The Deputy Director was invited to lead the 1997 Delegation which visited Japan in May 1997. Conferences and International Exhibitions The Curator of Australian Art and the Senior Project Officer represented the Gallery at the Contemporary Art of the Non-Aligned Countries conference and exhibition held in Jakarta in April, 1995. The Senior Project Officer, APT represented the Gallery and gave a paper on the Triennial at the Asia Edge 1996/Tokyo Conference held in Tokyo in February, 1996. 22
