The Second Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, Australia, 1996 : Report

transmissions away. We've got lots of reassessment and nose-grinding to do but it's a hell of an exciting time to be caught in. (Jose Tence Ruiz, Philippines; Sunday Inquirer Magazine, 17 November 1 996) Meitaki Maata (thanks ! ) Fa'afetai Lava (thanks!) and once again Thank you all for a great experience! Aro'a , Aroha, Alofa. (Ani O'Neill, Aotearoa/New Zealand) It's been a wonderful experience and privilege to join the APT. Many, many thanks to the Gallery staff to make it happen . Thank you and congratulations! (Chan Yuk-Keung, Hong Kong) For the wonderfully efficient and caring organisation ; for the warmth , hospitality and love , so generous and giving. And for filling up so many gaps in my understanding of my world - eternal g ratitude. (Nilima Sheikh, I ndia) APT - a very special coming together of what we consider to be the 'beginnings' of a very dynamic art movement - to use old fashioned terminology - The avant-garde is here - and quaint clean Brisbane - is hosting - hoisting this event - QAG an island of fireworks - still - Bravo - as we march with many flags into the next 'Tri' - next century. Deep gratitude to the very find individuals who made all this possible. (Vivan Sundaram, I ndia) The organisation was extraordinary. The facilities were extraordinary. Makes artists and people from other countries quite envious. Ideally, each country would run their own similar event, each taking their turn. A good exhibition ! I am certain that this is one of the most significant exhibitions from the region. The conference was rathe r too "big" and so appeared to be somewhat unfocussed. Last but not least: The artists' retreat! This is the best part! (Anusapati , I ndonesia; translated from Bahasa I ndonesia) Very glad to take part i n this exhibition . I have learnt a great deal from other col leagues. I am very happy, and it was a wonderful experience for my career as an artist. (Kami n Lertchaiprasert, Thailand; translated from Thai) It was a great experience for the three New Caledonian artists to participate in this Second Asia-Pacific Triennial exhibition through a cultural exchange which develops the spirit of collaboration between artists from different countries. I felt a strong feeling i n this exhibition, it was the st r ength of the works. (Denise Tiavouane, New Caledonia; translated from French) Bravo ! to the Asia-Pacific Triennial which continues to bring togethe r the different arts from Asia and the Pacific. Thank you Brisbane. (Micheli ne Neporon, New Caledonia; translated from French) I want to congratulate and thank you from the bottom of my heart for that unique opportunity to exhibit at the 'prestigious' APT. It allowed a neglected number of issues to surface and address , as our own needs change and as other . . . . world g roups gain liberation, so too in my desire for my fami ly and PNG to join in with these discussions and expressions. The occasion has been a milestone for us and we were able to see ourselves in relation to the rest of our region. My ideas are . . . 32
