Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, 1999 : Beyond the future : Report.

EXH I BITION The APT3 exhibition presented 1 44 works * by more than 77 artists c from 20 countries and regions in Asia and the Pacific. Artists included were from Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, I ndonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand , Singapore, Vietnam , India, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, New Caledon ia, and Australia. APT3 also included for the first time, artists from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Pacific Islands of Wallis and Futuna Islands, and Niue. Artists worked across a wide range of disciplines including large and small-scale instal lation , performance, sculpture, photography, painting, textiles, ceramics , film and video, and new media technologies such as the Internet and CD-ROM . For the first time in the APT project, the following components were included i n the exh ibition : • Access to the Virtual Triennial artworks through iMac computers in the 'APT Lounge' which accessed the APT Web site http://www.apt3 . net through an off-line I ntranet. • Access to the Screen Culture component {film, video and animation works) through screenings launched at the Dendy Cinema, George St, Brisbane, then presented throughout the exh ibition i n the Gallery's Lecture Theatre. • A dedicated Kids' APT space in Gallery 3 and the Watermall that presented works specifically commissioned from APT3 artists for children aged 3-1 2 . The artists and artworks were selected through a complex curatorial process involving five Curatorial Teams. Four curatorial teams covered the geographical areas: East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Pacific wile a fifth curatorial team , 'Crossing Borders' provided an avenue for globally mobile artists and artists engaged i n cross-media collaborations. However the exh ibition was instal led as a single exhibition of 1 44 works and not through national or geograph ical boundaries . The Exhibition was instal led in Gallery 1 , 2, 3 , 4, 5, 6 , 7, 8 , 9, 1 4, 1 5, 1 6 , 1 7 , the Watermall, the Gallery 1 4 Ramp, the Gal lery 2 Ramp, the Forecou rt, the Sculpture Courtyard , the Lower Sculpture Courtyard and the Gal lery Bistro.
