Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, 1999 : Beyond the future : Report.

AUD I ENCE PARTICIPATION Many of the works within APT3 offered unique experiences as aud iences were invited to engage with a range of artworks in unexpected ways. This aspect of the exhibition proved to be an extremely popular feature of the APT3 and prompted numerous retu rn visits by local aud iences . Specific works wh ich i nvited aud ience interaction included : • Xu Bing Xu Bing invited his audience to experiment with ink and brush in his New English Calligraphy classroom; • Durriya Kazi and David Alesworth Durriya Kazi and David Alesworth encourage audiences to elaborate on their understanding of home in their Very, Very Sweet Medina "Here we chose the stereotype of 'the home', a stereotype that is i nvested with a sense of belonging, social arrival, success, the perfect fam ily, the reason for enduring d ifficult working cond itions . . . . The home becomes both a reflective mi rror or a personal album . It becomes the repository of objects and dreams, and makes our l ifestyle possible . . . . 'Very Very Sweet Medina' sets out to create a site for exploring these mu ltilayered notions of home." Durriya KAZI and David ALESWORTH • Cai Guo Qiang Cai Guo Qiang explored the meeting of cultures as the theme for his installation Bridge crossing "From all the countries around the world and since ancient times until today, the bridge has many metaphorical meanings. It can be a connection between two s ides or a meeting point . . Participation of the aud ience is an important aspect of this work." Cai Guo Qiang • Lee M ingwei Lee Mingwei's Writing the Unspoken invited the aud ience to compose letters to the l iving or the dead in three writing booths in an effort to invite audiences to reflect on gratitude, insight and forgiveness. "My goal is to g ive visitors a deep and unexpected experience of certain i nner experiences which they share with others, of feelings which are deeply and commonly human." Lee Mingwei • Surasi Kusolwong During the moments of the day - Have a nice day Brisbane invited ch ildren and people of all ages to make large drawings of exotic fish while relaxing in a timber 'house' based on the floating houses of the old capital o f Thaland Ayutthaya . The d rawings could be taken away by the makers, or pinned onto the back wall of the installation for others to view. • Karen Casey Karen Casey's h ighly popular Dreaming Chamber invited audiences to press a button on entering a darkened room, triggering a 6-minute cycle of sound and l ight. • Kim Young J i n K i m Young J in's Walking on a Balance Beam was a dormant work until a visitor waled i nto the darkened space, triggering sensors wh ich activated a computer controlled bank of slide projectors and sound . 3 1
