Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, 1999 : Beyond the future : Report.

FULL PROGRAM CAPITAL CENTRES SYDNEY COFA (University of New South Wales) and Artspace Two forums were hosted at COFA on 1 4 and 1 5 September. Artspace hosted series of performances on 1 4 September. Participants involved Patrick Flores, Yu l i n Lee, Chen Zhen , Xu Bing, Gulammohammed Sheikh , Lee Mingwei, Amanda Heng (Performance) and Lee Wen (Performance.) Lee M ingwei (Crossing Borders) - COFA Forum participant Not only I was very imp ressed with the calibre of students ' works, butjust simply to be with the students again, I felt refreshed, inspired and motivated again. I realised that these students provided me a wonderful opportunity to re-examine my role and purpose in the community. Lee Wen (Singapore) Participant COFA/Artspace Performance Component, Sydney 1 0 day residency Umbrella Studio, James Cook University and Bonemap, Townsville The visitor program was very enriching and my only regret was that I did not have much time. I understand that various other artists had longer stays in residencies and perhaps that would have been more fruitful. However, I only hope that my performances in Sydney and Townsville as well as talk and workshop in Townsville help to contribute somewhat. ADELAIDE School of Art, Un iversity of South Australia One-day forum as part of the 'The Rubies, Pearls, Polystyrene' lecture series. Participants included Crossing Borders' artists David Chalmers-Alesworth and Durriya Kazi and APT curators Suhanya Rattell and Tim Morrell. Dr. Cathy Speck, Un iversity of South Australia ". . . The Rubies, Pearls & Polystyrene lectures in September featured curators and exhibitors from the Third Asia Pacific Triennial at Queensland Art Gallery. Curators, Tim Morrell and Suhanya Raffel/ and exhibitors David Alesworth and Durriya Kazi and Philippines artist, Santiago Bose addressed issues of the Triennial, the politics of curatorship and current trends in the region. "They were utterly stunning. Tim Morrell, David Alesworth and Durriya Kazi wowed the audience. It was so fresh because they had first come from the Triennial. Santiago Bose and Suhanya Raffel provided a different perspective and equally wowed the audience. " (Dr Cathy Speck) MELBOURNE ACCA, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art One day forum on 'Chinese Art of the 80s cultural diaspora' on Saturday 4 September. Key note speakers were Chen Zhen and Xu Bing. Stuart Koop, Curator, ACCA, Melbourne (coordinator of ACCA forum) The public forum at ACCA involving APT3 artists Xu Bing and Chen Zhen provided Melbourne audiences with some great insights into contemporary Chinese art of the 80s cultural diaspora, through the eyes of two of its leading exponents (whereupon there ensued some excellent debate too on the definition of Chinese contemporary art involving Melbourne 's Chinese arts community). Moreover that the artists are two of the leading artists anywhere in the world attests to the importance of the question for international contemporary art as well as the significance of the APT and the profile it has provided the region. 68
