Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, 1999 : Beyond the future : Report.

because of her practice, but also because of her calm, generous and intelligent nature. Mella Jaarsma (Indonesia) - One week residency Gold Coast Campus QCA I enjoyed it a lot. Together with the students we developed a project which was called 'The shed and the third drawer'. We went to our neighbours and asked them to take something from their shed or third drawer and give it to us for our installation. With this project we tried to open up a communication within the neighbourhood and open a discussion about art and function of art. For me it was interested to see because I went with some students to the Gold Coast skyscrapers and the people didn 't want to let us in. To afraid for this art people!! Next to the skyscrapers were small houses with surfers, they let us in and supported some objects they could miss and we listened to their. personal stories and stories related to the objects. On the last day of the week we made a display with the objects and documentation of the persons and living places in the University gallery. It turned out to be very interesting, with a lot of humour, collaboration and sharing. Some students couldn 't even go to their neighbours, because it was too dangerous! Queensland College of Art School Projects Queensland College of Art in itiated a major project i nvolving five APT artists undertaking week-long residencies with five high schools and primary schools . These exchanges were facil itated by third year QCA students . Th i s enabled a range of people of benefit from these residencies . Maggie Hollins, Second Year student at Queensland College of Art School project at Marshall Road Public School for Tissa De Alwis I enjoyed being part of this project. I also got great joy from watching Tissa encourage and entertain the school children who gave great gasps of awe when he finished demonstrating his repertoire of animals. I think the issue that touched the hearts of many of the children as well as the teachers was his fondness and palpable love for endangered elephants. I have heard Tissa speak at QCA and have visited him at his studio at QUT. He is a great ambassador for the continued celebration of ceramics and communication between artists of varying experience. Jennifer Mcdowell, QCA Student School project at Brisbane State High School for Jagath Weerasi nghe I found the experience of working alongside an artist form a separate, distinct culture very interesting. It allowed me to appreciate the issues this artist was addressing in a country which, although the size of Tasmania, carries a population greater than that ofAustralia. I was motivated to explore the cultural background and issues he was attempting to convey in his APT installation. I was able to appreciate how themes and concepts that initially appear to be relevant only to the local culture are able to communicate a broader meaning for a general audience. Jeanie MacNamara, QCA Student School project at Wynnum North Primary School for Daniel Waswas Probably the most positive aspect of the project was watching the children change their perceptions about their own artistic abilities. Because they were surrounded by artists who encouraged experimentation and expression rather than 'colouring between the lines ', they seemed to be more encouraged to 'give it a go '. However if they could coax Daniel into 'giving it a go ' for them, they weren 't complaining. Daniel Waswas (PNG) - One week residency, School Project QCA Anyhow, in regard to my experience at the school. On my way to the school, my level of expectation was framed around what I anticipated and that was to share and talk about my experience. However, I had to totally change my expectations visually from the first contact because of the first impressions that I was observing. I felt like a kid again meaning it was quite loose and the kids were fun to work with. It was a two way form of interaction on a level we all could understand each other. I found them very open minded to express whatever they felt at that moment and came to understand their point of view. I think that personalityplays a vital role when it comes to working 73
