PUBLIC PROGRAMS - KIDS’ APT ‘SUMMER SPECTACULAR’ - FULL LISTING Bug Master - ‘Summer Spectacular’ mascot Bug Master was the ‘Summer Spectacular’ mascot whose physical larger-than-life presence ensured the awe of our younger audience. Applied Theatre students from Griffith University took turns to dress up in the cuddly costume known as Bug Master who was seen on stage and throughout the exhibition space. Bug Master was relied upon to attract attention for upcoming performances during each day. DATES 11–25 JANUARY 2003, 10.00AM – 3.00PM Chinese Acrobats 20-25 January 11-11.30am and 2 – 2.30pm Dandelion Water Mall Jerry Liu and James Wang are two Chinese acrobatic magicians who performed the red ribbon dance, plate spinning and a mixture of Chinese magic and acrobatics in the gallery’s Watermall. Noodle Oodle 11–17 January 11 – 11.30am Dandelion Water Mall Chef Billy Chak from the local Brisbane ‘Enjoy-Inn Restaurant’ created hundreds of noodle strands from one big dough mass. Made with fast, karate-like moves, this performance drew on the history of noodle making in China. ‘Powa! Kung Fu’ Friday, Saturday, & Sunday 10 – 10.30am ‘Slo Mo Tai Chi’ Monday & Wednesday 10 – 10.30am ‘Streeetch! Yoga’ Tuesday & Wednesday 10- 10.30am Introducing Kung-Fu, Tai Chi and Yoga, these performance workshops were programmed to encourage children to test flexibility in their reflexes and muscles. These three forms of meditative exercises are popular activities in Asia, providing a sense of discipline and energy. Hula Haka Daily 11 – 11.30am Hips were swivelled for the Pacific hula , tongues were poked out for the Maori haka and thighs were slapped for the Samoan sasa dance! Local Polynesian dancers taught the moves that inspired the Pasifika Divas. Speak it, Sing it, Dance it Daily 12 – 12.30pm Queensland Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Centre coordinated this event providing children with the opportunity to learn Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian word and dance steps. Perlie Shellz’s Pacific Stories Daily1 – 1.30pm Pasifika Divas’ Siaosi Mulipola returned to the Gallery as ‘Perlie Shellz’, a wonderful, cuddly character whom along with local Pacific Islander performers, Ulalia Leota and Sahlua Gearon, took his young audience on a journey through stories, myths and legends from the Pacific. 139
