http://www.fed.qut.edu.au/ec/museums/col.html Queensland Art Gallery Research Activity: Children's Art Centre - Research and Development As part of the ‘QUT Museums Collaborative’, the Gallery has undertaken an intensive collaborative relationship with Queensland University of Technology working specifically with early childhood education under the supervision and direction of Dr. Barbara Piscitelli, BA, MEd, PhD. (Chief Investigator). The Gallery is developing a large-scale Children's Art Centre as part of the forthcoming Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (QGOMA) due to open in 2005. The Children's Art Centre will incorporate dedicated studio workshops for active art making, as well as a full scale aesthetics and education program for children. As part of audience research for this new centre, the Gallery will continue researching children's learning in museums with QUT. During 2003, four specific research problems will be investigated by a joint QUT-QAG research team, the first of which was the APT ‘Summer Spectacular’. The Gallery hosted a large-scale children's summer holiday program - ‘Summer Spectacular’ (January 11 – 25, 2003). An audience of 50,000 was achieved for this two-week event. Two studies were undertaken to provide information about audience participation at various aspects of the program and exhibition (eg, parent-child questionnaires, and exhibition/program critiques). Second, the Gallery will mount a major exhibition on ‘Colour’ for young audiences. This exhibition will be exhibited during March - May, and coincides with the introduction of the new Arts syllabus in Queensland. There are research opportunities related to exhibition design, audience development, technology innovations, and arts + education partnerships. Research questions for this activity are currently in development. Third, the Gallery is an intensive period of development for the new Gallery of Modern Art. With its $10,000,000 investment in an innovative Children's Art Centre within the new museum, the Gallery wishes to research innovative exhibition program in museums at a global level via research and site visits. A study tour is planned to innovative exhibition/museum sites in North America and Europe. Finally, the Gallery plans to host an international conference on child-centred innovations for art museums in the near future. Planning and organisation of the conference will be completed during 2003. 2. GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY - APT 2002 NEW MEDIA WORKSHOPS Griffith University is one of Australia's Top 10 Universities.
