Kids' APT7 : In review

9 THANK YOU FROM QAGOMA As the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art’s (QAGOMA) flagship international contemporary art event and the only major exhibition series in the world to focus exclusively on the contemporary art of Asia, the Pacific and Australia, ‘The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’ (APT) series is an important project for engaging diverse audiences at QAGOMA. Marking the twentieth anniversary, APT7 was presented across the Gallery’s two sites, bringing to audiences new and recent works by 75 senior and emerging artists and groups from 27 countries across the region. Since its inception in 1999, Kids’ APT has become a key component of the Gallery’s programming for children and families. The first Kids’ APT represented an important milestone for the Gallery — it acknowledged children as a key audience for international contemporary art events and spurred a shift in our commitment to ensure we engaged all audiences in the experience of art. Working with contemporary artists on major exhibitions such as APT also provided the inspiration for current Children’s Art Centre programming, which aims to engage children with contemporary artists, enabling children of all ages to actively participate in the creative process. To complement APT7, the Children’s Art Centre developed Kids’ APT7, consisting of 13 art works displayed across the Children’s Art Centre and QAGOMA spaces. The projects — including immersive installations, hands-on activities and multimedia projects — explored a range of contemporary art and ideas that resonated with the themes of APT7. Kids’ APT7 featured works by APT7 artists Daniel Boyd (Australia), Tiffany Chung (Vietnam), Parastou Forouhar (Iran/Germany), Uji THANK YOU FROMQAGOMA School children at APT7 viewing Huang Yong Ping’s Ressort 2012 Handoko Eko Saputro (aka Hahan) (Indonesia), Roslisham Ismail (aka Ise) (Malaysia), Takahiro Iwasaki (Japan), Kwoma Arts (Papua New Guinea), Richard Maloy (New Zealand), Erbossyn Meldibekov (Kazakhstan), Paramodel (Japan), Tromarama (Indonesia) and Te Wei (China), and a Kids’ APT drawing archive display. Groundbreaking exhibitions such as APT7 and projects such as Kids’ APT are made possible by the commitment of the Gallery’s supporters. In particular, we would like to sincerely thank Tim Fairfax, AM , Gina Fairfax and the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, whose generosity was vital to presenting Kids’ APT7. This support enabled the Gallery to commission new art projects especially for children, some of which were subsequently gifted to the Collection by the artists; publish the Gallery’s fifth children’s book, Hahan and Friends ; and provide the opportunity for thousands of families across Queensland to take part in Kids’ APT7 on Tour. The Gallery would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the Queensland Government and APT7’s Presenting Sponsor Santos, as well as tourism and media partners. We hope you enjoy reading about the highlights of Kids’ APT7. Executive Management Team, QAGOMA
