Kids' APT7 : In review

23 KIDS’ APT7 ON TOUR 22 KIDS’ APT7 ON TOUR CARDWELL GALLERY The Cardwell Gallery has been showcasing local art and craft for nine years and is located in the Cardwell Historic Precinct. A team of dedicated volunteers, including artists and craft workers, ensures that the Gallery doors are open to the public throughout the year. The Gallery is also home to the Hinchinbrook Regional Arts Association. Local children and their parents attended Kids’ APT7 on Tour at the Cardwell Gallery on Wednesday 16 January. Children enjoyed customising Indonesian artist Hahan’s mask templates, and working with a local artist Sally Moroney. GLADSTONE REGIONAL ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM The Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum is housed in the old Town Hall building, which was designed by Rockhampton architect Roy Chipps. The Gallery opened after an initial conversion in 1985, while an extension including a purpose-built gallery space, a workshop studio, administration offices and an open-air courtyard was completed in 2003. Kids’ APT7 on Tour was held at the Gallery on Saturday 19 January — 263 children and adults participated in the program. Gladstone Gallery staff developed an additional activity inspired by the Kids’ APT7 on Tour mascot, Pong Pongan, the hermit crab. Children could create their own hermit crab from recycled materials to take home. The children and their parents found the activities very engaging and were pleased they could take their finished pieces and the Hahan and Friends activity book home. Jane Arnold, Hinchinbrook Regional Arts Association Kids’ APT7 on Tour was a fantastic program for children. Gallery staff enjoyed hosting this fun event for the community. The exciting and diverse activities allowed the program to be presented throughout the Gallery space, enabling the children to feel at home within the whole building. The APT7 theme was brilliant — it allowed children to experience art and ideas from other cultures that they might not normally experience and the cartoon workshop was a great way to get a local artist involved.
