Kids' APT7 : In review
31 KIDS’ APT7 ON TOUR 30 KIDS’ APT7 ON TOUR PERC TUCKER REGIONAL GALLERY, TOWNSVILLE Located in one of Townsville’s finest heritage buildings, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is named in honour of Alderman Perc Tucker, Mayor of Townsville from 1976 to 1980 and was officially opened on 25 September 1981. The Gallery has a diverse program of local, national and international exhibitions and facilitates public programs including floor talks, lectures and performances that complement exhibitions. Kids’ APT7 on Tour was facilitated at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery as two family fun days in the January and April school holidays. The program in April was so popular that staff extended the program into the afternoon. Children who attended particularly enjoyed creating masks that they could then wear home after completing all the different activities in the program. Parents enjoyed the opportunity to spend quality time with their children and loved the fact that it was free. The program also enabled parents to enjoy the current exhibitions on display at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery while children were engaged with the activities. DOGWOOD CROSSING, MILES Dogwood Crossing, Miles is an innovative centre focused on community, creativity and inspiration. It has become the cultural heart of the district and fulfills its vision of being a vibrant centre that connects with people and inspires creativity, thus enriching the community and the lives of those who visit. 54 children and parents attended the program and a separate comic workshop in March at Dogwood Crossing, Miles. Children who attended enjoyed learning about different culture and trying new activities. The Gallery created samples of the ‘Sira Pisang’ dish from artist Ise’s project which the children gobbled up. The samples were enjoyed so much that some of the parents went home after the program to try their hand at the recipe. Participants were pleased they were able to access a cultural program for children and took the opportunity to actively work with their children – they were fully engaged not just standing by watching.
