Kids' APT7 : In review
35 KIDS’ APT7 AT QAGOMA Children visiting APT7 and Kids’ APT7 had the wonderful opportunity to engage with a very special creature from the Asia Pacific region — Pong Pongan, the hermit crab, the Kids’ APT7 mascot. Designed by exhibiting Indonesian artist Hahan, Pong Pongan acted as a guide for young visitors to the Gallery. Featuring on children’s labels, which were written especially to introduce young visitors to the art works in the exhibition, Pong Pongan also greeted children as part of a large-scale wall graphic in the Children’s Art Centre. He also featured in the Kids’ APT7 publication Hahan and Friends . The hermit crab changes its shell many times during its life, a playful reference to the curatorial theme of temporary structures in APT7. As the hermit crab is commonly found in many coastal areas of the Asia Pacific region, Pong Pongan is also a symbolic link to the many countries represented in the exhibition.
