Jeong Hwa is inspired by the urban environment where he lives and the mass-produced items he sees every day, especially in the markets of Seoul, his home town. His practice involves collecting plastic items of all shapes and sizes and transforming them into large sculptural installations. In doing this, he encourages the viewer to see the items in a new way — as art. In his work for APT8 Kids, the artist invited visitors to create mandala patterns using brightly coloured bottle caps and container lids. A mandala is a traditional circular pattern used in the Hindu and Buddhist religions to symbolise life and the universe. [My kids] were able to let their imaginations run wild and create anything they liked with such a simple item. They realised there is art and entertainment value to be found in everyday objects.
