Drawing on traditional patterns, the artist invited children visiting APT8 Kids to create their own tiputa, a type of garment originally from Tahiti that resembles a poncho. Traditional tiputas are made from tapa (barkcloth) and are used throughout the Pacific for dance and special ceremonies. For APT8 Kids, young visitors were able to decorate a paper tiputa by rubbing crayons over carved surfaces; the tiputas could then be worn and taken home. It helps to show children that art is not just about making pretty looking pictures, but that it has to be connected and give meaning to a person’s feelings, ideas, cultures, to be successful.
