33 APT9 KIDS ARTWORK AND PROJECTS PAULINE KIMEI ANIS THE ARKONO PROJECT 2018 In the matrilineal societies of Bougainville, men and women traditionally transformed shells into beads for use in ceremonial practices. The materiality and labour involved in fashioning natural materials into beads gives them their value. Pauline Kimei Anis is a jewellery-maker from Siwai, where body adornment remains an important customary practice. For APT9 Kids, the artist invited children to create their own paper bead necklace. Children were encouraged to consider how the process of creating their beads transformed paper — often seen as an expendable resource — into something precious.
