Visitor comment [Our] kids enjoyed looking at the screens and working together to match the animal shapes. Visitor comment GARY CARSLEY PURPLE REIGN 2018 Inspired by R Godfrey Rivers’s painting Under the jacaranda 1903 in the QAGOMA Collection, Gary Carsley created a ‘secret garden’ for APT9 Kids that was bursting with the iconic purple blooms of the jacaranda tree. Carsley used this much-loved tree as a symbol of the dramatic consequences of European colonisation, focusing on the environmental impact of introduced plant and animal species. Through a multimedia touchscreen activity, Carsley invited children to catch a glimpse of some animals that are now extinct due to changes made to their habitat. As part of the project, Carsley also reinterpreted the scene in Rivers’s painting. ‘Photogenic moments’, created through the use of camouflaged furniture, encouraged visitors to pose for a photo and share their image on social media.
