It inspires one to imagine entering the work to explore the tangled mess of poured, oozing paint. Via the interaction with their environment, Noël Skrzypczak’s works reveal a concerted effort to push the boundaries of contemporary painting. She shows that to revel in the frank materiality of painting does not negate the potential to explore its illusory aspects. Skrzypczak joins a number of artists in this exhibition whose work ‘re-dresses’ the canon of modern painting, taking important art‑historical ideas and debates into new fields. Skrzypczak creates works that are not simple rebuttals of past perspectives, but attempts to create new contexts in which multiple perspectives reside. Donna McColm
