LURE of THE SUN : Charles Blackman in Queensland LURE of THE SUN: Charles Blackman in Queensland page 9. page 8. Glencore is proud to continue its support of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art through a space dedicated to telling the state’s stories. For over six years, the Queensland Artists’ Gallery program has brought to life diverse stories that illuminate local histories — be they social, personal or cultural. These stories have been told through the accomplished pottery and carvings of LJ Harvey, the naive paintings of James Fardoulys, the work of pioneering sculptor Daphne Mayo, the paintings of artist and education advocate Vida Lahey, Ian Fairweather’s breathtaking late work, and Sam Fullbrook’s vibrant compositions. More recent and contemporary exhibitions of work by Ruth Stoneley, Madonna Staunton, Richard Stringer and Carl and Phillip McConnell have explored various strands of practice from the past two decades. Meanwhile, the Artist’s Choice series has opened the doors to the Gallery’s Collection for Queensland artists Lawrence Daws, Marian Drew and Michael Zavros to curate displays speaking to their own interests and influences. Glencore is equally delighted to facilitate the ongoing touring of some of these exhibitions and associated programs to regional Queensland. ‘Lloyd Rees: Life and Light’ visited 12 galleries around the state in 2012–14, and workshops based on the exhibitions ‘Ruth Stoneley: A Stitch in Time’ and ‘Madonna Staunton: Out of a Clear Blue Sky’ went to half a dozen western Queensland schools in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Glencore is proud of our contributions to Queensland communities and the state’s economy, and considers the creation of opportunities for Queenslanders to engage with the art of the state to be a crucial aspect of our community investment program. As a major Australian artist with a connection to Queensland that has strongly informed a significant part of his oeuvre, Charles Blackman is an ideal subject for the program. Glencore is very pleased to support this substantial exhibition which sheds light on a vital phase in the life and career of a great artist.
