Anne holds degrees in Cultural Heritage Conservation, Art History and Studio Art, and undertook a two-year internship (1997–99) at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, where she studied the de-varnishing of modern oil paintings, including works by Pablo Picasso and Karl Schmidt‑Rottluff. Her interests include the conservation of modern and contemporary paintings, particularly mid-twentieth-century paintings, and the introduction of synthetic painting materials. Her recent research projects have included the materials of Scott Redford and Ian Fairweather. Michael Hawker is Associate Curator, Australian Art, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art and curator of ‘Lure of the Sun: Charles Blackman in Queensland’. His recent exhibition projects include: ‘The Founding Years 1895–1915: A Collection for Queensland’ (2015) (with David Burnett, Curator, International Art), ‘Transparent: Watercolour in Queensland 1850s–1980s’ (2014), ‘Pleasure of Place: Photographs by Richard Stringer’ (2013), ‘Impressionists / Edwardians / Expatriates: Australian Art from the Collection’ (2012) and ‘Lloyd Rees: Early Brisbane Drawings’ (2011). Michael has a Bachelor of Arts, with a double major in art history, and postgraduate honours from the University of Queensland. Michele Helmrich is Associate Director (Curatorial) at the University of Queensland Art Museum. Her 1987 honours thesis was titled ‘ Barjai , Miya Studio and young Brisbane artists of the 1940s: Towards a radical practice’ (under the name Michele Anderson). In 1988, she curated the exhibition ‘Young Turks and Battle Lines: Barjai and Miya Studio’ for the University of Queensland Art Museum, and in 2005, with Peter Spearitt, she co-curated ‘Defending the North: Queensland in the Pacific War’. Her recent projects have included exhibitions on Rosemary Laing, Lindy Lee, Judy Watson, Fiona Foley (in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney) and Margaret Olley (with Nick Mitzevich).
