No.1 Neighbour: Art in Papua New Guinea 1956-2016
105 STRONG WOMEN №1 NEIGHBOUR LISA HILLI Paraide Raim To Ngatia, Makurategete Vunatarai, Tolai people 2016 Image courtesy: The artist may now reside outside her homeland of Rabaul, but her connection, identity and role within the Tolai community is still recognised. Placing her within the Australian landscape shows the historical connections between Queensland and Papua New Guinea, as well as the migration of Papua New Guinean people to Australia, and the continuing importance of articulating cultural history within this beautiful land we now call home. 1 The Vunatarai armour is comprised of many small ‘tags’, which are shaped pieces of cut-out photographs, layered like feathers in a semicircle to create a neckpiece.
