Rop 11 Queensland A r t Gallery Society • In November 1996 the Society purchased two significant works for the Gallery: The function 1996 by Stewart MacFarlane, which depicts the familiar sight of Brisbane's Customs House; and Heir-styles by Chikanobu c. 1890,Ago * an elegant ukiyo-e print that adds to the Gallery's collection of Japanese woodblock prints. The Society has purchased and gifted a total of twenty traditional Japanese woodblock prints to the Gallery since 1982. p The Society's Management Committee took a proactive approach to / increase membership numbers, and undertook a targeted membership drive throughout the blockbuster exhibition 'Paris: In the Late I 9th Century'. A new life member, Mr Patrick Corrigan, was admitted in April, and in NOW May the Society officially launched the Corporate Membership Program. As a result of the increased recruitment efforts, the Society now has a m e m b e r s h i p o f I 9 6 7 m e m b e r s . Visitors to 'Paris: in the Late i9th Century' browse in the exhibition's specially themed Paris Shop. The Society has continued to support the exhibitions and activities of the Gallery. Through the bimonthly publication ARTlines, the Society provides a link between the Gallery, Society members, and the public. ARTlines is published with the funding support of the Edward Corbould Charitable Trust, which is managed by Perpetual Trustees Queensland Ltd. The Society's functions throughout the year included a successful range of monthly luncheons, a film evening, a fashion parade organised with the Queensland Museum, and a cocktail party in conjunction with 'Paris: In the Late I 9th Century'. All functions attracted large attendances, including young members and potential members. The Society's 1997 Gertrude Langer Lecture was presented by Australian artist Jeffrey Smart, who spoke about his life and work. The Society's activities were assisted throughout the year by a variety of organisations, including Yellowglen and Mildara Blass, who provided a quality selection of wines for all the Society's functions.
