Queensland Art Gallery Annual Report 1997-98

Workshop The Workshop has maintained a high level of quality work throughout the past twelve months, supporting the requirements of the Gallery's New Installation and several major exhibitions through the manufacture of walls and other construction components. Finished exhibition sites and fittings, a wide variety of frames (more than 230 standard and non– standard frames), touring cases, and stretchers for works in the Collection have been completed for Exhibitions and Regional Services. A Wood Machine Apprentice was appointed in May 1998. Access, Education and Regional Services The subprogram was renamed Access, Education and Regional Services in December 1997. The principles governing Access, Education and Regional Services strategic objectives are broad public accessibility and enjoyment, cultural and social relevance, and community partnerships through participation and interaction. These tenets will continue to guide the development in the future. Its objectives this year were to establish and develop new access initiatives, with an increased emphasis on youth programs and on providing services to regional Queensland which will attract youth and general audiences. Programs have included the 'Themed lecture' series for students, an Education program which was sent to all schools in urban and regional Queensland, and the Teacher Advisory Service which provides information on the Collection. 'Portraits are People Pictures', the first of the Children's Exhibitions drawn from the Collection of the Queensland Art Gallery, was in preparation towards the end of the year. Other regular events were the 'First Wednesday of the month' public lecture series, and the 'Sunday in the Gallery' program which includes family days and new programs for children. These, with the several travelling exhibitions and other ongoing programs, offer diverse ways to appeal to a variety of learning styles and different levels of art knowledge. The subprogram continues to offer forums and lectures designed to attract members of the art and academic communities as well as the general public of all ages. All initiatives attracted new audiences during the year and were well received by Gallery visitors and the urban and regional client base. :/VlUvvl _,l -:7 ~~ :r 17
