Queensland Art Gallery Annual Report 1997-98

continues to be limited by the low level of resources which can be made available. The fortnightly current awareness bulletin produced by the Library was transformed into What's New, an electronic alert service which highlights relevant current journal issues, new resources, Internet tips and web sites. Purchase of the latest version of DB/Textworks in May 1998 provided the opportunity to continue conversion of the Library's databases to this Windows-based software. Participants from the ASEAN Art Museum Professionals Workshop and Study Tour were given a demonstration of Library databases and the Gallery web site. A group of government and corporate librarians toured the Library as part of an International Special Libraries Day function at the Gallery. Protection and Services Officers regularly provided administrative assistance, and volunteers continued to contribute significantly to the maintenance of special collections. Documentation of the Gallery's Collection was enhanced by the assistance provided by the Curatorial trainee in the processing and maintenance of Collection files. Publications The Publications section produced a range of books, catalogues and ephemeral publications to document and interpret the Collection, and in association with in-house and travelling exhibitions of works from the Gallery's and other collections. The section also contributed to other Gallery programs, editing a range of pamphlets, merchandise and information and promotional sheets. The appointment of a second part-time Publications Officer to replace the Publications Assistant position provided the impetus for some changes to publications procedures and policy, including the move to project management. The Publications Planning Group was reconstituted to oversee an integrated publishing program for the Gallery. This also facilitates a closer relationship with the Gallery Store, which manages distribution and marketing of Gallery publications. Major publication projects this year included Emily Kame Kngwarreye - Alhalkere - Paintings from Utopia (in association with Macmillan Publishers Australia); View from the Chair, a collection of the speeches delivered by Dr Richard Austin during his Chairmanship of the Gallery; and Francesco Conz and the lntermedia Avant-Garde which accompanied an exhibition of the Conz gift to the Gallery. Smaller publications which were produced to accompany in– house exhibitions were Observed and Contrived: Recent International Photography from the Collection, and The Ellis Gift. English Porcelain in the Queensland Art Gallery Publications also supported exhibitions touring to regional Queensland, with the production of Contemporary Vessels and Jewels. Australian Fine Metalwork, Still Life.· Reworking the Tradition 1650-1994, and Images of Australia 1890-1995 from the Queensland Art Gallery Collection. A new publication series, 'Queenland Art Gallery In Focus', was initiated. This series of booklets will be produced to accompany exhibitions from the Collection, to document individual works and artists in the Collection, or to record aspects of the Gallery's history and practice. The first four booklets in the new series - Conrad Martens on the Darling Downs, Art Pared Down: Exploring Minimalism across Media, Kamin Lertchaiprasert: Problem/Wisdom and Art of Inclusion, a Regional Services publication - are in production. Several major works are also in production. Brought to Light: Australian Art 1850-1965, the Queensland Art Gallery Collection, a major anthology of essays on the Australian Art Collection, is close to completion. Also in production are Golden Heritage of Indonesia, which will accompany the exhibition of heritage works from the National Museum in Jakarta, and Portraits Are People Pictures, the first children's book based on the Collection, which will form part of a merchandise package accompanying a children's exhibition. The subprogram Head attended the initial meeting of the Copyright and Reproduction Officers at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in October 1997. Procedures for managing copyright queries and reproduction requests are being further developed. A trainee support officer was appointed in March 1998 under an Office Administration Traineeship to assist with the Rights and Reproduction Service, and a stocktake of the transparency collection was initiated in May 1998 in cooperation with the Collection Support Unit 20 u)6NG, Tr3n -Oong Vlrtnarr n 1q2) H6A, Le Huy Vietnall' h 1 g 1l H~U, Tr3n Luu Vietnam t-. • 9ld ( >llaborc::~ n!,_ c1rtisti (Procession with political prisoner) 'f., >m ...he i/Var c:...f Resistdf''C ~ :tgainst the French' se, 1e!) qi:;~ 1thoqr :tpri ,.,n i.:dper, mounted or ha1 driadP 1-'drer L8.4 x l6cm· l2 4 x <0.4cm (ccmp.'
