~- \ I . ·~ ,r The Melbourne Sun 11 August 1982 Concrete and IT'S no Sydney Opera House, but it does have a lot In common with the great white wave. It shares similar panoramic views, a beautiful river frontage , has been built al a cost of millions . of dollars and is the cultural centre of a state. It's the new Queensland Art Gal– lery, the first stage of a massive undertaking to house all facets or Queensland culture in one corn• plex. Made or off-white sandblasted concrete and bronze glazing. the gallery blinds the eye of the visitor in the hot Brisbane sun. Inside, the appearance is just as startling: stark and devoid of any embellishment. . This ls how noted architect, Robin Gibson, saw the role or an art gallery. "Mr Gibson used plain, basic materials because his concept or art ls that it must stand on Its own," says Ted Rye, gallery spokesman. The m.a,jor part _or the Quee!15l~nd culture Art Gallery's collecllon Is devoted to Australian art of various periods and media. Ttie European collection Includes a small but important group or French and British paintings of the late 19th and early 20t,h centuries. Spacious and functional , the only touch of color to be seen ls the healthy foliage neatly placed in nooks and crannies. The only sound comes Crom the water mall with its dramatic foun– tains and water sculptures. The gallery and the new Foun• taln Room restaurant, with its beautiful views or the city and the Brisbane River, will soon be a mecca !or international tourists. And, as construction takes place on the next stage, The Perfomuns Arts Complex, plans have·aJ.ready been initiated for the Qu'eensland Museum and the State Library. T I •' ' .
