I We of Festival '82 were proud to be part or the scene and we arc apprecia– tive of the ClOllfidencc shown by Sir Ed– ward Williama u Chairman of the XII . Commonwealth Games Foundation, when last year be gave the Warana Festival Board "uommiulon to stage a Commonw.tival at the time of the Gamci ' · de an alternative programmj ltfementary to the Gamath~ . "' Over tbo.Jieniiil.(rom September 19 more than 15.b',uticipants from over -40 Commonwealth countries came to Brisbane just for the purpose of taking part in a festival .or a non-competitive nature where they could demonstrate their traditional cultures. This programme staged over I000 events of various kinds, in addition to supporting our neighbouring citizen, at the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Rcdclirfe and Red- . lands. The performances were held in the City Square, the Queen Street Mall, the Queensland Cultural Centre, the South Bank Clem Jones Gardens, the City Botanic Gardens, the Albert Park Amphitheatre and other City ven– ues, in addition to providing entertain– ment for the competitors at the Games village itself. I add my thank& to the citizens of Brisbane for making Festival '82 a vi– brant and happy family affair. My thanks too, to the Federal ·and State Governments, to the B(isbane City Council and ·the many 1ponsor1 whOK support enabled the entire outdoor pro– gramme over three week& to be present– ed free to the public, ~ of counc the thousands of volunteers who together with the executive of the festival made it all possible. There is no reason why, ir we people of Brisbane can maintain our friendly and community outlook, that each year we cannot enjoy similar festival experi– ences at which our Pacific and Asian neigbboun can join with us. In the meantime, the exhibition at the Qu~ensland Art Gallery of cos– tumes, masks and jewellery of the Commonwealth and other exhibitions continue to attract more than SOOO visi– tors each day and we arc pleased to confirm that tbcsc exhibitions with the co-operation of the art gallery trustees, will remain with us until December 12. The exhibits will then be dismantled for the priceless treasure&.to be re– turned to the Commonwctl\l'oontries which have so generously loaned them. - later Pum&a, Cllaiflll8a, Wanu ud Comllollwealtli F•tml 1912. l
